Health Careers Club

Carnegie Vanguard High School students who are enrolled in the Health Career Club receive a standardized course of training needed to care for today’s diverse population. By participating in volunteer assignments, service learning projects and CPR certification, students develop a strong work ethic and learn the value of helping others. The Health Career Club promotes student leadership and encourages relationships with community leaders and role models. Along with the valuable experiences, it will equip them with real world skills that are transferable in healthcare, academic and other work environments.


Health Careers
& Me

A 60 minute seminar for high school students that focuses on four areas:

  • Health Career Awareness- we provide a health career resource guide for students called Health Opportunities in Texas (H.O.T) Jobs.
  • College- we give each student a personal file folder with college, résumé, and volunteer information. 
  • Communication- students work in teams and dialogue different effective communication techniques.
  • Self-Empowerment- students complete a critical thinking activity which precedes a discussion on motivation and self-empowerment.

Elementary Science Activities

Children discover the world of science in a fun and innovative way.  Students love science when it is explored through hands-on experiments and activities.  Science classes leave children excited and eager for future science experiences.  Hand-on activities, lots of individual attention, and projects to take home all add up to a great time and great learning experience for the child.

Target Audience:  Students in grades K – 6, especially underrepresented minorities and students in underserved areas.

Tobacco Education

Program Coordinators provide community partners with free tobacco programs and educational activities. 





 

CONSULTATIONS focus on second hand smoke issues, local ordinance information, and cessation resources for employees.

 

COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONS on the benefits of smoke-free public places & the hazards of secondhand smoke in the community.


The CALIENTE (Changing Attitudes and Lifestyles by Increasing Exercise, Nutrition, Training, and Education) experience is an after-school program that combines hands-on learning and fun within the nationally recognized Citizen School partnership at Jane Long Middle School. 
CALIENTE students combat obesity by developing healthy habits through a variety of interactive activities.  Six, seventh and eighth grade student apprentices learn to set wellness goals and create individual career maps as they study the discover the role of a nutritionist, dietitian, kinesiologist, fitness trainer, health educator and good health. 

The Greater Houston AHEC CALIENTE curriculum offers economically disadvantaged students weekly lessons that include access to healthcare professionals and college students who will encourage them to continue their education to develop valuable life and vocation skills.

Healthy Choices

A health education presentation for teens or adults.  This is a 60 minute presentation related to current health issues.  It is designed to promote healthy decision making and to educate participants on the importance of developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Target Audience:  Teens and Adults, especially underrepresented minorities and students in underserved areas. 


Interview & Career Preparation

This 90 minute seminar teaches students skills and techniques for successful job and college application preparation.  Students receive information on how to complete college applications, prepare for college and job interviews, and seek volunteer opportunities.

Target Audience:  High school students, especially underrepresented minorities and students in underserved areas. 


Dental Impressions
 

This 60 minute session involves oral health education and dental profession education.  Students learn about health professionals such as a dentist, dental hygienist, dental laboratory technician, and dental assistant.  In addition, they learn about the anatomy of a tooth and proper oral health care while participating in a fun activity where they create a dental mold of their own teeth. 

Target Audience:  High school students, especially underrepresented minorities and students in underserved areas.


Experience Gerontology

This is a 60 minute geriatric sensitivity training for high school students that focuses on four areas:

  • Growth of the Population- students are updated on the growth of geriatric population and how that impacts careers in the medical field.
  • Vision Impairment- we impair student’s vision to distort their reading abilities 
  • Speech Impairment- students are given gumballs to impair speech while reading to a partner. 
  • Mobility & Dexterity- students’ fingers are taped to limit mobility while they prepare a food item in a short period of time.
