PROJECT NOTICE

Sunnyside Update – Using Health information to Get Well

During the period of February 2012 – September 2012, Texas AHEC East-Greater Houston Region (GHR) will perform a health information needs assessment project in the Sunnyside area. This project is an opportunity to get updated information on health concerns and recommend steps to address them.

The Sunnyside population of approximately 21,000 is disproportionately affected by limited access to healthy food, drug use, sexually transmitted diseases, obesity related illness, criminal activity and low income. Its residents are mostly African American.

Knowing what, why, when, and how to provide health information is critical to improving the health of people in the Sunnyside community and compiling effective steps toward this goal will be accomplished via the following:

• Listening to Sunnyside residents, organizations, educators, business owners, health providers and area representatives to determine how they need and want to receive health information.
   

• Sunnyside community members will be asked to participate in a short survey or interview designed to document current health information usage and future possibilities.
   

• Texas AHEC East GHR will prepare a report of its findings and distribute it to health and wellness stakeholders to encourage partnership and development of strategies to provide culturally sensitive health information to Sunnyside.

Texas AHEC East GHR, located at 5959 W. Loop South in Bellaire, Texas, is a 17-year old nonprofit organization whose mission is “Making Our Communities Healthier.” They work with community partners to provide resources for community-based student education, health careers promotion and preparation, health literacy and health professional development.
